Ballymitty National School Architecture and Interior Design
Ballymitty National School in County Wexford involved the provision of a 2 Class SEN Unit to the front of the school grounds located entirely at reduced ground floor level in response to the topography of the site. The extension was connected to the school via a link corridor ensuring seamless integration of the Special Educational with Mainstream accommodation within the overall school. The material finishes and colour palette used were both contemporary and sympathetic with the existing school and surrounding countryside. The soft play area was connected directly into the Central Activity Space within the Unit and offered a safe and secure environment for the SEN students to play and engage with mainstream students within the main playground areas. The design of the Unit provides an abundance of natural light into the Central Activity Space and Classroom spaces.

The school playing courts had to be adjusted to ensure the mainstream facilities were not negatively affected by the SEN works. While the extension was underway, other upgrade works were being carried out within the school to ensure the school as a whole was of a high standard for the students to occupy. The SEN Unit has been a complete success for the school due to its contemporary design, clear functionality and the positive impact it has had on the Students, the Special Educational Teaching Staff, School Management and Parents.
